The Origin of Love Beads
When those red
berries come in springtime,
Flushing on your southland branches,
Take home an armful, for my sake,
As a symbol of our love.
Wang Wei’s emotion was shown in his poem “One-hearted”, which has been loved by people through the ages. This “As a symbol of love” must be beyond the expectation of Wang Wei, I guess. Since then, love beads become a symbol of love and have drawn much attention. However, few people have much knowledge about the beads.
Many people erroneously believe that love beads (or jequirity) are produced by Acacia Confusa (which literally means “love tree” in Chinese), and have therefore misunderstood the connotations of the poem. Also, how many people have seriously studied the literary meaning of Wang Wei’s “One-hearted.”?
Love beads are produced by the jequirity tree. Those that
grow in Southeast Asia yield the most beautiful blood-red beads that look far
better than ruby and coral, with a shape that resembles a beating human heart.
However, to obtain perfect blood-red heart-shaped bead is indeed difficult. To
obtain the best selection, one must have experience and pay a great deal of
attention. Nowadays, many people mistake
Adenanthera
pavonia or
Abrus precatorius as
jequirity
beads.
Since the time of the Xia Dynasty, China has undergone countless changes. However, no man or thing can ever obscure the charm of love beads. People cherish love beads because they are shaped like the human heart. Like two overlapping hearts growing in passion and tenderness, the bright and eye-catching love beads symbolize romantic love.
High officials, aristocrats and wealthy families in the south of China enjoy
planting the jequirity
(which
literary means “peacock tree” in Mandarin)
in their gardens. When the branches begin to grow they resemble a
peacock strutting along
with his tail extended, and to the Chinese people they
symbolize wealth and good fortune. These people also love jequirity because it
bears heart-shaped beads. For the upper crust, it has become fashionable to make
ornaments from these beads and exchange them as gifts.
Love beads
are most beautiful, symbolizing truthful hearts that are so hard to find. It is
most moving to be treated sincerely by someone. Therefore, we use love beads to
express our feelings and convey our romantic intentions. As gifts for relatives,
friends, or lovers, love beads can express our blessings, true love, and
affection. Love beads are indeed the best way to express our tender regards for
others.
Wang Wei was an official in Tang Dynasty. Throughout history, government
officials were forbidden to form factions. In the poem “One-hearted”, Wang Wei
uses the jequirity to express his congratulations to a long-separated and
faraway friend:
“Jequirity is grown in the faraway south. A few more branches will grow in the
coming springtime. Oh, dear friend, your chance has arrived. Try your best to
grasp every opportunity. I am thinking of you and await your return.” Reading
these words, we can feel Wang Wei’s deep regard and heartfelt concern for his
friend.
Therefore, aren’t love beads special?!
